Lockheed AC-130U
|
Scale 1/48
This is a model of the famous AC-130 U, the last evolution of the AC-130A flying gunship. This version is the most heavly armed aircraft ever built: 7,62 mm miniguns with rolling barrels, 20 mm Vulcan guns and a 105 mm howitzer.
This flying gunship was operative during the Vietnam War and the latest version is currently US AIR FORCE.
The model started with a kit of the A version. The kit was designed with Vietnam camouflage – a black undersurface- and 3 blade propeller engines. The kit had also a lot of detailing inside the fuselage and in the cockpit.
For this reason, I decided to install some internal lighting to show the detailing. To model the U version, it was necessary to make several modifications to the kit, including hand-building armaments, antennas and changing the camouflage to light grey.
The model is shown in a diorama with some ground personnel made by Hasegawa.
The model shows the AC-130U of the 16 th Special Operation Squadron which was based in Brindisi in 1997 during the Bosnian war.
